Short Description
This program has been designed for nurses who want to improve their basic knowledge of the care and management of patients who are critically ill. The use of non-invasive blood pressure monitors, how to recognise and manage chest pain and the nurse’s role with 12 lead ECGs will be discussed. Nursing activities connected with the respiratory and cardiac systems will also be examined.

Objectives
The purpose of this two day seminar is to offer nurses an opportunity to improve their basic knowledge about critical care activities. At the conclusion of this program participants should be able to:• Clearly describe the cardiac cycle and the cardiac conduction system.
• List five common cardiac arrhythmias and how to identify them on an ECG strip.
• Know the correct indications for using NIBPs versus invasive monitoring.
• Describe the symptoms of chest pain relating to respiratory disease.
• Discuss the role of vasoactive drugs.
• Recall important aspects of respiratory A & P.
• State the indications for using oxygen as a therapeutic tool.
• Know when CPAP and BiPAP are indicated.
• Understand how to maintain normal parameters of acid-base balance.
• Improve their skills when inspecting a person’s chest using the thoracic landmarks.
