The job description is the core documentation tool for describing the employees role. It is absolutely essential that this is kept up-to-date. This session will briefly review the role and purpose of the job description.
Hiring for Results
Explore your current recruitment practices and how your organisation seeks to get the right person for the job. It will include writing a job advertisement to attract the best people.

This session explores the complete process of selecting a person, from identifying need and reviewing the application documents to appointment. It will include looking at the job description and the person specification, types of interview and the preparation necessary for the interview process to be effective. It will then move to appraising the cover letter / resume/CV of a potential candidate.

Now it is time to practice your interviewing skills. This will be a fun time where you will be able to experiment and learn what works and what doesn't.

Have you ever asked yourself why we manage people rather than just let them get on with it? In this session we will look at the purpose of performance management and reflect on the performance management structures that exist in your workplace and how to use them to get results.

In this first session of day two, we will consider how much the line manager is responsible for managing and developing their staff. You will be given some questions to answer about your current level of involvement in the development of your staff.
9:45am - How To Make Staff Shine - Performance Appraisals
The performance appraisal interview forms an important part of the performance management process. This is an opportunity to explore the purpose of appraisals and how to prepare for them. You will then look at the structure of the interview itself and how best to conduct it.
10:30am - Morning Tea Break
11:00am - The Way That You Say It Matters!
In this session we will explore how to use basic counselling skills, not in a therapeutic setting, but in the context of assisting staff manage their performance and those skills necessary to complete the appraisal interview effectively.
We will be looking at listening and questioning skills, how to give feedback and how to set goals. In particular, we will review the importance of being objective and without bias and review the notion of 'unconditional positive regard'.
12:00pm - Caring Through Communicating - Time to Practise
Here is a perfect opportunity to practise communication skills reflect genuine concern for the individuals work life and which will be helpful when conducting a performance appraisal. Topics include:

1:45pm - Ongoing Care - Identifying Talent and Correcting Staff
The appraisal system, as well as your day-to-day management can help identify huge potential in members of staff that is yet to be realised. Nurturing this potential, is one of the keys to retaining good staff. We will look at how to identify staff for promotion and what rewards can be offered to keep talented staff members motivated.
We will also explore the processes involved in dealing with staff who constantly underachieve and fall short of what is expected of them.
2:30pm - When Corrective Action is Not Working - Letting Staff Go
This session will consider the ramifications of dismissing staff.

In this final session you will work with action planning work sheets where you will have a positive opportunity to:
