Nurse Managers

General Description

Good staff management is essential in all organisations, but is vitally important in a health care environment. This seminar covers all aspects of hiring, keeping and caring for the staff within your team. It will ensure that you have the skills and knowledge to confidently identify staffing issues, recruit the best staff and retain and develop them to ensure high-level performance. Practical sessions on interviewing, communication, performance management and appraisals allow attendees to gain experience working through tricky situations and provide an opportunity to discuss issues and scenarios relevant to your own situation. Under-performance and dismissal are also covered along with the ramifications and responsibilities associated with these difficult issues.

Need for Program

Health care environments are rapidly changing to adapt to the current health care needs of communities. As well, health care is becoming more complex. Staff mix and demands on nurse managers are increasingly challenging. It is more important than ever that the right people are appointed and retained in the right jobs and that their potential is both encouraged and realised. There needs to be accessible support in the form of practical education that can assist nurse managers to achieve these goals.

Aims and Objectives

This two day seminar will address the importance of effective staff management within healthcare. It aims to provide all health managers with a comprehensive update of the core skills required for successful staff outcomes, retention and teamwork. Additionally, this program will provide participants with 'hands-on time' to practice their interviewing and performance appraisal technique.

At the conclusion of this program it is expected that the participant will be able to:

  • Learn the correct process for interviewing, selecting and managing new staff.
  • Understand and be able to communicate the benefits of effective staff management.
  • Improve upon or implement a successful performance appraisal system within your workplace.
  • Learn how to deal with staff members who consistently under-perform.
