Description
Ms. Carter provides an overview of musculoskeletal trauma. The three categories of musculoskeletal trauma are defined. She reviews the role of the nurse in caring for people with different types of musculoskeletal injury. Extremity trauma and pelvic trauma are examined. She outlines steps to assess and prioritise treatment and care for people with complex musculoskeletal injuries. There is a review of the care of patients with amputations. The principles for assessment and diagnosis of musculoskeletal trauma are provided.

Speaker
Louise Carter has gained extensive experience in managing patients who have sustained trauma. In addition to trauma nursing responsibilities, her roles have focused on clinical consultancy, education and quality improvement. Her special expertise is coordinating the multi-disciplinary care of trauma patients with complex injuries and needs. Louise’s qualifications include a Master of Health Science (Nursing Education). She is a member of the Society of Trauma Nurses and is an inaugural member of the Australasian Trauma Society.
