Perinatal depression and anxiety are perhaps more common than what we may realise. Depression is a common complication of pregnancy, with between 15 and 22% of people experiencing depression during pregnancy and/or during the postpartum period. Anxiety is also a common perinatal mental disorder that is estimated to affect at least as many people as perinatal depression. Other mental health disorders that may occur during the perinatal period include Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
