What you'll learn:

1

Gain a clear understanding of what dementia is.

2

Recognise the importance of communication to dementia care.

3

Understand different types of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.

4

Update knowledge on best-practice management of the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.

Who it's for:

Healthcare professionals and carers in primary care, aged care and hospital settings, as well as those looking to increase their knowledge about dementia care.

Why it's needed:

Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia, however, in spite of its commonality, with 487,500 Australians currently estimated to be living with dementia in 2022, it is still widely misunderstood and underdiagnosed. In line with the National Health and Medical Research Council's (NHMRC) Clinical Practice Guidelines and Principles of Care for People with Dementia, having a holistic and thorough understanding of dementia and the recommended care practice is paramount for optimal outcomes for patients, their families and carers.

Purpose:

To update learners’ knowledge of best-practice dementia care, inform learners about the different types of dementia and how they differ from each other, help learners recognise the different behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), and provide enhanced knowledge on BPSD management and treatment options.
