Lecture Overview

Hernias can be seen following any surgery used to create a stoma. Prevention is essential to avoid medical emergencies such as strangulation. In this session, clinical nurse educator Leeanne Johnson reviews the types, risk factors, assessment and complications of parastomal hernias, including a demonstration of hernia prevention appliances.

Leeanne Johnson is a Clinical Nurse Consultant in Wound Management and Stomal Therapy at Logan & Beaudesert Hospitals. Her education specialties are stomal therapy, pressure injury and complex wound management. She also sits on the Pressure Injury Prevention and Management committee, Clinical Product Review committee and QLD Health Standing Offer Agreement (SOA) Wound contract committee. Leeanne has been a tutor for the Australian College of Nursing post-graduate certificate course in Stomal Therapy Nursing, a QLD State representative for the Australian Association of Stomal Therapy Nurses (AASTN) and has experience in both community settings and large tertiary hospitals.
