The term 'chronic illness' generally refers to an illness or disease that is persistent in its effects for more than three months. Chronic illness is debilitating and a major cause of mortality worldwide.
Nurses not only care for people with chronic illness, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic kidney disease (CKD) and type 2 diabetes, but they also have a major role in the prevention of chronic illness through educating patients about diet, exercise and behavioural modification in order to reduce risk factors.
