Disseminated intravascular coagulation is characterised by a systemic activation of the clotting cascade as a result of an unregulated generation of thrombin and activated fibrin. This results in concurrent bleeding and clotting. In this lecture, clinical educator Joanne Reading looks at the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations and management of this potentially fatal complication.
