The residential establishments that provide the best care for people with a dementing condition are those in which the staff are regarded as the most important resource because of the quality of care they can provide beyond the merely practical day-to-day tasks. For staff to give of their best they must be managed in such a way as to motivate them to want to do their best. That is, they must be allowed responsibility, authority and proper resources. It is the task of the manager to provide an environment in which every member of staff will always want to give each resident the best possible care.
