This presents some unique challenges and risks for the perioperative and postoperative nurse. In this lecture, Lynn Murray explores new challenges emerging in surgical nursing and the complexities of caring for the high-risk surgical candidate and the often murky issue of consent.

Topics covered

  • Factors and trends that have affected the role of the surgical nurse: what are some of the obstacles currently faced?
  • What makes a patient high-risk for anaesthetic and procedures and what are considered high-risk surgeries?
  • Looking at the issue of consent
