This comprehensive eChapter provides an in-depth and wide ranging explication of the viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites that can cause infections of the vulva and vagina. Illustrated with copious ...high quality photographs, both rare and common infections are described, as well as tips for diagnosis and contemporary treatment pathways. This resource is suitable for any health professional providing clinical services in the areas of women’s health and paediatrics. This eChapter is divided into four logical classifications of infection. Commencing with a comprehensive review of parasitic infections, the author initially describes the more common invasive organisms such as Pediculosis pubis (pubic lice), Sarcoptes scabei (scabies) and Enterobius vermicularis (threadworm or pinworm). Following this, rarer parasitic infections such as Schistosomiasis mansoni (bilharziasis), Wuchereria bancrofti (elephantiasis), hydatid disease, Trichomonas vaginalis (trichomoniasis), Entamoeba hystolytica (amebiasis) and Leishmaniasis are given equal coverage. The second section is dedicated to parasitic infections, and covers the more common fungi that may invade the female genital tract. Candida albicans (thrush), is given particular attention, and a thorough review of its variants, diagnosis and treatment are described. This is complimented with a subsequent discussion of non-Albicans yeast infections. Tinea crusis (tinea), Pityriasis versicolour (tinea versicolour) and white piedra form the topics for the balance of the section. Section three focuses on bacteria as the causative mechanism of pyogenic vulvar infections. Beginning with an extremely useful explanation of the nomenclature and terminology used to describe pyogenic infections, the author discusses a wide ranging collection of causative organisms, including Neisseria gonorrhoea, actinomysis, erythrasma, trichomycosis, diphtheria chancroid and donovanosis, amongst many others. The final section describes viral infections, including the herpes strains, cytomegalovirus, Human papilloma virus, Molluscum contagiosum and HIV.
