In the past, sliding scale insulin was often used to treat hyperglycaemia, but is no longer supported by individual health service policies or national and international diabetes clinical guidelines. In this lecture, diabetes nurse practitioner and credentialed diabetes educator Michelle Robins provides an update on inpatient diabetes management. She discusses the selection of inpatient glucose lowering medicines and why sliding scale insulin should not be used.
