Course Overview

Pressure injuries come in various stages and locations on the body but most are preventable. All healthcare workers can play a role in preventing the harm and cost associated with pressure injuries.

Topics
  • Pathophysiology of a pressure injury
  • How to stage a pressure injury appropriately
  • Documentation of a pressure injury
  • Pressure injury management and equipment selection
  • Dressing and product selection for a pressure injury.
Need

The prevention and management of pressure injuries is a critical priority due to the significance of pressure injury as a severe adverse outcome within health and aged care. They are often debilitating and sometimes life-threatening. However, despite national and international clinical practice guidelines on the prevention and management of pressure injury, reported incidence rates from Australia and overseas remain high.

When pressure injuries do occur, they are often associated with pain and suffering for the patient and a burden on the health and aged care system. Knowledge of best-practice in pressure injury prevention and optimising management is essential for all health professionals.

Purpose

Enhance knowledge and skills to assist in the prevention and management of pressure injuries in patients.

Learning Outcomes
  • Apply knowledge of pathophysiology and risk factors in relation to the prevention and management of pressure injuries.
  • Assess the stages of a pressure injury appropriately and document to allow for the best-practice management and monitoring to occur.
  • Be more confident in the selection of equipment and dressings to successfully manage a pressure injury and avoid placing a patient at further risk.
Target Audience

This Ausmed Course is for registered nurses and all healthcare professionals working in a variety of settings who care for patients at risk of or who have developed a pressure injury.
