Need for Program

General nurses and those working in surgical units and clinics care for people with a broad range of conditions that require surgical intervention. With the increased use of technology, there is a high risk potential for patient complications to emerge. The patient’s preferences and education about their surgery and recovery must be considered to avoid anxiety and unwanted negative effects. Due to the adverse outcomes associated with preventable errors at any time during the surgical experience, all nurses must ensure their practice is safe and evidenced.

Purpose of Program

To provide surgical nurses with relevant practice that provides safe care to each and every patient who requires a surgical or invasive procedure, including orthopaedic interventions.

Your Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain the importance of talking to patients about their procedure to alleviate patient’s anxiety and enhance their recovery
  2. Improve patient outcomes by using validated tools for assessing pain and evidenced postoperative pain management
  3. Prevent common postoperative complications, including infection and VTE, and identify early signs of patient deterioration to initiate appropriate action
  4. Plan a comprehensive education program for a patient undergoing joint replacement surgery that could be implemented in your workplace
